Top 5 Lockdown Boredom Busters

By Ryan Mack

Taking a look at the five games that got me and every other gamer out there through two lockdowns and a global pandemic that trapped most of us inside

Now granted with health being the primary concern, people have been finding fun, new and elaborate ways to fill their time or picking up new skills. However , this extra free time has allowed gamers to never miss a title or a chance to catch up on any they have may not have gotten round to. Now despite it also having and adverse effect on the industry, with Covid effecting or delaying some major releases (Halo infinite, Far Cry 6) that isn’t going to stop us from counting down the top 10 titles that kept gamers thumbs moving during lockdown. With a massive surge in online player base as well as the sales of games in lockdown, while it has been a year to forget for most of us. It’s been a good one for gaming. With that in mind here are the top five pandemic power players of the gaming industry:

1. Call of Duty: Warzone(PS4,PS5,XBOX One, Xbox series X,PC):

There was really only one place to start when talking about the biggest games of the pandemic. Activision’s free to play, cross platform, battle royal, first person shooter has taken the online gaming industry by storm. Topping twitch viewing charts since its 2019 release and garnering over 100 million online players in total . Warzone still sits at the apex of games in the online and streaming communities. Despite seeing its one year anniversary earlier this year the game is showing no signs of slowing. With new battle pass and map updates to keep players coming back for more. Warzone could sit at the top for a while yet.

2. Ghosts of Tsushima (PS4,PS5):

Hands down my game of the year. Sucker punch game’s Action , Stealth , RPG based in feudal Japan, when samurai reigned on the island of Tsushima is nothing short of a masterpiece. With a revolutionary wind navigation system for quests and new stunning scenery around every corner, it is a game you can find hard to put down. Combine that with the smooth combat, amazing soundtrack and compelling story, its easy to see why, despite being a PlayStation exclusive, it has sold over 6.5 million copies.

3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (PS4, Xbox One, PC):

The whole list isn’t Call of Duty honest! However, number three still has to go to Infinity wards return to form with Modern warfare in 2019. Releasing before the start of the first lockdown, the timing could have hardly been better. Whole teams of mates furloughed sitting down to COD for hours on end (I literally have SEVEN DAYS PLAYED) bashing each other over the mic like you were 14 again. Combine this nostalgia with great gameplay and some classic fan favourite maps making a return, this is an easy call for the number three spot.

4. Final Fantasy VII : Remake (PS4, PS5):

Now I know you may be thinking wasn’t this out in the 90s. You would be correct, but Square Enix has finally given us the much anticipated remake of one of the worlds most renowned RPG games. Now having played it, It’s easy to see why it took so long and the results do not disappoint. The game has been fully re made from the ground up, giving life to those pixelated characters and locations everyone loved from its PS1 predecessor. Graphical update that makes Midgar look so stunning aside, the overhaul in the combat system since the 90s has breathed whole new life into the game. Switching from turn based to a more interactive style of fighting will no doubt stop alienating non final fantasy hardcore fans and make this a far more accessible game. After burning 18 hours into the game to finish the story it’s hard to believe this is only part one of a two part release. However, with its success in sales and reviews, I’m sure Square Enix will be hard at work on part two already.

5. Fenyx Rising (PS4.PS5.Xbox One ,Xbox Series X, PC, Switch):

For the five spot, we have included the least known game on the list as I had a blast with it and felt it could use a little more recognition. Ubisoft’s Fenyx Rising, was one of the first few games released as “optimised for series X” so it caught my attention. Sandwiched between two of Ubisoft’s bigger properties , “Assassins creed: Valhalla” and “Watchdogs: Legion”, Fenyx didn’t seem to get the promotion or praise it deserved. Based in Olympus , our hero has to travel around freeing the Greek gods who have been imprisoned by the titan Typhon in order for their help in stopping him. The gorgeous setting of Olympus looks straight from a story book. With challenging yet engaging combat as well as a host of unique puzzles throughout, it was a game that unexpectedly kept you coming back for more.

So while you no doubt couldn’t have missed Call of Duty during the pandemic, hopefully this list has filled you in on a couple of gems you may have missed..
