Mark Cerny gave a run through of the new consoles capabilities before revealing its £700 price tag
Sony revealed its brand new PS5 Pro this week during a tech demo hosted by lead architect Mark Cerny. Cerny emphasised some key goals for the new system, narrowing these objectives to what he called the "big three". These included a "larger GPU", "advanced ray tracing" and "A.I driven upscaling".
Changes to the GPU included giving it "67%" more compute units and "28%" faster RAM speeds, which combine to make in game rendering up to "45%" faster. Advanced ray tracing allows for a "streamlined and accelerated" approach that allows rays to be calculated at "double or even triple the speeds of PlayStation 5". While A.I driven upscaling has been labelled as "P.S.S.R" and analyses game images "pixel by pixel to add extraordinary detail which boosts the effective resolution of the games". Cerny wrapped the presentation up by comparing games like The Last of Us part 2 and Ratchet and Clank side by side before emphasising that the PS5 Pro has almost double the power of its predecessor.
The show ended by revealing the system's price point across the globe with it coming in at: £700 here in the UK, $700 in the US, 800 euros across Europe and 119,980 Yen in Japan. These prices are for the console alone and do not include the cost of a stand and disc drive add-ons which could take the price well over £800 if you have a physical library.
Fans and Critics alike took to twitter to express their dismay at the high price point, with most in agreement that it was too expensive given it doesn't come with the aforementioned stand and disc drive respectively.
