Remedy entertainment announces that everyone’s favourite pain pill popping, gun toting, matrix diving maniac is getting a ground up rebuild
Rarely is news in the gaming community so well received across the board. However, Max Payne wasn’t just any other game. Remedy Ent took queues from John Woo’s Hard Boiled and the ridiculously popular Matrix in the late 90s to create a cult classic for the ages in 2001. The crazy diving gun combat, hand painted comic scenes and gritty story made the game a hit with fans and critics alike holding a 89 on Metacritic. The sequel was just as well received in 2003, hitting an impressive score of 86.
While the most recent instalment, Max Payne 3 wasn’t helmed by remedy, Rockstar published and developed this time, it continued the series’ trend of scoring well with reviewers. The divorce of Rockstar and Remedy may have been good enough reason to think we would never see a remake of the classic originals.
That was put to bed today when Remedy announced a new agreement with Rockstar. The studio also confirmed the platforms as well as how the game would ship, saying: Remedy will develop the games as a single title for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox series X/S using it’s proprietary Northlight engine.”
Now while it is clear the game is at concept stages from the statement this announcement was most likely made to attract investors and talent to work on the project. It may be years before we see the finished article but its another welcome trip down memory lane to look forward to.
