A live-action movie adaptation for upcoming RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is already in the works, before the game has even officially released. Developers Sandfall games are teaming up with the production company gave us the Sonic Movie Trilogy, Story Kitchen, to make the film.
Founders of Story Kitchen Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg only had good things to say about the upcoming project when speaking to Variety. They said: "We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive world of ‘Expedition 33’ to the big screen, The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike.”
The game which looks to emulate the classic turn based RPG style, does have an interesting premise, with a god-like figure in the Paintress, painting a cursed number every year, which leads to everyone that age disappearing off the face of the earth. The number also decreases every year, which brings humanity closer to extinction each cycle. As the protagonist in the game, you happen to be this cursed age which of course leads to you and your companions trying to put a stop to the Paintress.
A packed premise for a movie adaptation which seems to have piqued Story Kitchen's interest despite not knowing how successful the game will go on to be. Expedition 33 will be next in a long line of game to movie adaptations made by the studio that include the likes of Sonic 1-3, Tomb Raider, Disco Elysium, Dredge and many more.
The game itself is scheduled to release on April 24th this year.
